April 2007 Issue

This month we update you about the exciting new developments with Nova5000 bundled software including LanSchool v6.5 and LearnStar's SmartTRAX, as well as free Nova5000 applications direct from Fourier. We'll give you the annual NSTA roundup where Fourier met increasing interest in the Nova5000 due to the No Child Left Behind new focus on science. We examine the Nova5000 computing model as experienced in the rural Bedouin community and highlight just some of the whitepapers and bid guides available on the distributor download center.

LanSchool v6.5 is the latest addition to the ever increasing bundled software for Nova5000.

creates a computer lab environment where teaching and learning can be maximized to the exclusion of anything else. LanSchool gives teachers full control over the class and their students' Nova5000 screens. Teachers can ensure students are not distracted by blanking out their screen and disabling Web browsing. They can demonstrate skills by broadcasting their own screen view to all the student screens and thus explain a procedure or concept visually and verbally. Teachers can also ensure an ordered and monitored classroom by having on their own screen a thumbnail view of every student's screen in the class – as demonstrated by this diagram.

"LanSchool is very simple to use, keeping your focus on teaching, not managing software!" to learn more about LanSchool visit http://www.lanschool.com/software.html

Coming Soon... LearnStar's SmartTRAX for NOVA5000

The Nova5000's list of bundled applications is ever growing and the latest innovative partner is LearnStar's SmartTRAX. TRAX standing for - Teach Smart, Review Smart, and Assess Smart - Xcross K-12 curriculum!

Nova5000 has not only enabled teachers to achieve 1:1 Computing in their classrooms but now ensures total control by teachers over large classrooms of students all individually working on their Nova5000. With the LearnStar application teachers have total control over the classroom format, pace and activities. LearnStar provides competitions in multiple choice, true/false, polling and short answer activity formats. Activities match relevant curriculum topics and age requirements. Teachers can use any of the multimedia enabled pre-created activities, or create their own using the editor tool. They can either choose from a vast library of graphics, audio and video clips or import their own. Detailed reports for each student really ensure individual student profiles guide class content choices and allows for the best student performance.

Fourier at NSTA 2007

This years National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) in St Louis had an attendance of more than 11,000 educators, decision makers and science leaders. Open to member and nonmember science educators, the conference offered the latest in science content, teaching strategy, and research to enhance and expand science teachers' professional growth. The large Fourier Systems booth was staffed by the complete US Sales and Marketing team and saw a very broad range of visitors. Brenda Raker, Chief Executive Officer of U.S. Operations reported that educators from K through University level visited the booth representing all the disciplines: Life Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Sciences and computer science. The No Child Left Behind new focus on science led to a lot of interest in the Nova5000 which not only provides students with hands on learning experiences with sensors and probes but also provides all the other tools students need to analyze, research and report their findings. Teachers at the NSTA reinforced broader international feedback Fourier has received about the Nova5000, that it is a total solution bundled with many software that really meets the needs of the entire school curriculum.

The SoundRecorder for Nova5000

The SoundRecorder for Nova5000 is yet another new application ready for the Nova5000 and will be bundled free of charge with the next OS release of the Nova5000 in May. It was developed in direct response to school requests for sound recording functionality for the Nova5000. The toolbar contains Stop, Play, Pause and Record capabilities and enables students and teachers to record sound and save in WAV files, or open other WAV files and play them. This utility is invaluable in opening up a whole new level of resources for teaching and learning.

You can already download the SoundRecorder application from the Nova5000 Download Center (and follow the Installation Instructions provided there)

1:1 Computing Model with Nova5000 in the Rural Bedouin Community

As part of the fast moving trend towards 1:1 student computing, many ministries of education worldwide are investigating a variety of 1:1 computing models. Here is a report made by the Ministry of Education assistant in Argentina, Ms. Laura Serra, currently testing the Nova5000, OLPC and ClassMate (Intel). She was very impressed with the rural area usage of the Nova5000 and in this report provides data on two remote locations in Israel of Bedouin students using the Nova5000.

A Short History of Probeware

Bob Tinker's Probeware Team at the Concord Consortium have developed an interesting document detailing the history of probeware. See the following excerpt: "Probeware continues to be refined, gaining increased flexibility while becoming less expensive. One important current development has been the use of probeware with calculators and handheld computers. This not only reduces the cost of the computer, it makes it feasible to extend experiments outside the lab and classroom."

Why use computers to teach Physics Labs?

Microcomputer-Based Laboratories (MBL): This white paper presents a very broad range of research examining the effects of computer aided learning in Physics Labs. From middle school computer aided science learning to microcomputer-based laboratories effects upon student learning and conceptual development in undergraduate physics.

NOVA5000 Software Updates

Nova5000 software updates are always available from the Nova5000 Download Center - most recently they include an updated MultiLabCE 1.13 and Inside Math for Nova500 - a visual Math vocabulary demo from Math Resources Inc. (developers of the Portrait 4 Software)

The new LCD for V5.8

The new LCD for V5.8 has new and improved brightness. There are CE brightness controls with 11 positions and bring a very high standard of brightness. One customer said "...and at full bright (10) the new screen is readable in both open shade and (just barely) in full sunlight!! This is HUGE for in-the-field data collection. I don't think I've ever seen a screen before that worked in full sunlight except for the (very expensive) transflective displays.
