Grant Program from Fourier Systems to Help Build Technology-Rich Classroom
Spring Valley CCSD 99 will be implementing a classroom set of Nova5000s, the student mobile learning devices from Fourier Systems. In addition, they will receive a US$500 voucher to equip a math and science lab with a selection of scientific probeware for conducting experiments. The district’s implementation of "Mathematics Goes Green!" will be led by Technology Director, Teri Rossman, and Mark Abbott, a sixth grade math teacher at John F. Kennedy Elementary School. With the help of the Fourier Systems grant program, the school district is working to meet the state’s one-to-one computing initiative set forth by Governor Pat Quinn.
"Through this grant program, we want to empower students to increase their math, science and technology skills, allowing them to create new technology, develop innovative ideas and thrive in a global marketplace," said Dovi Bruker, CEO of Fourier Systems. "We felt the application submitted by Spring Valley CCSD aligned with this goal, and we are pleased to provide the district’s students with access to technology to further engage them in math and science."

The Royal Treatment Recognizes the Nova5000 as a Leading Science Lab Solution |
 |
| |
|
|
| |
Along with two other solutions, the online educator blog The Royal Treatment says the Nova5000 is a “great choice for making science hands on, and for helping students become classroom scientists - and who knows - career scientists as well. All can supplement an existing science course, or help create a new science program...
The Fourier Nova5000 is more than a science lab, because besides probes and science, it is a wireless Internet solution as well. I had an opportunity to review it. If you need a lab that can go to the Internet, this works. For some, that may be too much, so you need to know whether you’re prepared to go wireless or need all the extras, including e-mail” |

Join us at the NSTA New Orleans National Conference, March 19th – 22nd, Booth number: 2110. We'll be celebrating the Year of Science with the attendees and exhibitors of the NSTA National Conference on Science Education at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.
"Celebrating the Year of Science...Laissez les Bons Temps Rouler!" What better place to learn about and celebrate the wonderful things happening in science education than in New Orleans, an inspirational and resilient city known for its joie de vivre. The New Orleans Conference Committee has planned the conference around four professional development strands that focus on topics of current significance-Science and the Human Spirit, Research to Practice: The Science Teacher Professional Continuum, Energy and the Environment: The Natural and Human-designed World, and ISTE: Meeting the Needs of the Digital Student.
An impressive array of workshops, seminars, featured speakers, field trips, exhibits, and networking opportunities is sure to provide you with a transformative learning experience. In addition to concurrent sessions, the conference offers a variety of special programs and ticketed events. The Exhibit Hall brings a unique opportunity to examine an unparalleled display of top-quality instructional materials, equipment and professional opportunities. Whatever opportunities you choose, I promise you will leave this conference "transformed" and able to bring back new ideas that will advance your science program and professional learning community. I look forward to meeting and talking with you to learn more about what NSTA can do to support our common pursuit of a science-literate nation. Together we can transform science education for all!" Probe of the Month: Temperature TC-K (0 °C - 1200 °C) |
 |
| |
|
|
| |
This month's probe of the month is the Temperature TC-K, part number DT025. This is a Thermocouple Type K (TC-K) sensor with a range of 0 °C to 1200 °C.
The sensor is extremely accurate, and has a maximum error of 2% over the entire range. The TC-K sensor is mainly used for high temperature measurements, monitoring chemical processes that occur in high temperatures, or simply monitoring ovens. The high accuracy and reliability of this sensor makes it an excellent tool for industry as well as for educational requirements.
The TC-K sensor is composed of the Fourier System sensor case and a 20 cm thermocouple wire. Typical experiments with the probe include Exploring a candle flame, Measuring the temperature of exterior walls and roofs of buildings and Investigating the thermal insulation of the building envelope.

This month's free experiment download is the:
Exploring a Candle Flame using the Thermocouple Type K 0 °C to 1200 °C sensor.
In this month's experiment students can explore a candle flame in three characteristic areas near the top, center and base, labeled with 1, 2 and 3 in the image. A flame does not show everywhere the same temperature at every region. The characterization of such a flame is possible with a thermocouple (a highly sensitive, fast responding Temperature sensor ranging from –200 °C to well over 1000 °C).
