National Science Teacher Association (NSTA) 2009 Conference Roundup

Fourier exhibited at this year's NSTA Conference 2009 which took place this month in New Orleans. Despite tightening budgets and access to resources teachers made a big effort to attend with a common aim of professional development. The exhibitors were toured as educators seeking to improve their instruction techniques and capabilities with the help of cutting edge teaching approaches and technologies for science education.

Brian DeSoto, Fourier's Director of US Sales shared his experience of the show with us:

NSTA this year had a noticeable enthusiasm by the attendees.  Maybe it was the weather, or maybe it was simply the location, the attendees this year were very friendly and eager to hear about our products. Many people stopped by our booth and continue to be excited by the Nova5000. The form factor of the 5000 lends itself to more of a lab style device and teachers were very impressed with the comprehensiveness of the Nova5000. They continually brought up that the Nova5000 appears much more user-friendly than the new products of our competitors. "Plus the fact that the Nova5000 has all of the bundled software truly puts Fourier Systems ahead of the others," stated many of our booth guests. Again and again teachers voiced their regret in purchases they had made from our competitors before they had known about the Nova5000. They found the Fourier offering so much more functional and user friendly than competitor products. The words of one Science Curriculum Director best sums up this NSTA 2009 roundup. He told us "Our teachers were instructed to search and find the very best product here at the conference that would create the largest impact on our students.  The Nova5000 is the one product they have brought me, the Science Curriculum Director, to see.  And I agree!"

New 2009 Fourier Systems Product Education Catalog

Fourier has released its 2009 Fourier Systems Ltd. Data Logging Solutions Catalog this quarter. The catalog contains more than seven product family solutions, eleven specialized science bundles, four data analysis software solutions, more than fifty quality science sensors and multiple accessories, as well as Fourier’s own range of Science Curriculum with more than eleven printed experiment books for Math and Science subjects, multiple online curriculum options and html workbooks.

To enable customers and resellers to quickly find the product they are looking for, the catalog is split into different color coded sections for: Products, Bundles, Software, Sensors, Accessories and Cables and Science Curriculum. An index listing is also available.

As well as product information, the catalog features latest pedagogic research, customer recommendations and Science and 21st skills learning concepts.

Probe of the Month: Current (±2.5 A)

This month's probe of the month is the Current (±2.5 A) DT005 sensor. The Current sensor is an Ampere meter, measuring current values between -2.5 and 2.5 A. It is a differential sensor, capable of measuring both direct and alternate current and is ideal for use in a wide range of experiments in Physics and Chemistry. The sensor has no Floating Ground. The sensor is housed in the Fourier Systems plastic sensor case, and has two durable banana plugs for easy connection. Typical Experiments include EMF and Internal Resistance, V-I Characteristics of a Wire, a Light Bulb and a Diode, Resistance of a Wire – Ohm's Law, Series and Parallel Circuits, Magnetic Field of a Solenoid vs. Current and AC Circuit - RCL Resonance.

Free Experiment Download

This month's free experiment download is the: EMF Voltage and Internal Resistance experiment using the Current (±2.5 A) sensor.

In this month's experiment students can explore the relationship between V and the current flow. The potential difference between the terminals of a voltage source when it is not connected to an external circuit is the electromotive force (EMF) of that source. The symbol ε will be used for the electromotive force. When an external circuit is connected to the source the potential difference V between the terminals will drop below its open circuit value. The difference between ε and V is caused by the internal resistance r of the source.
